Design for Technology (DETE)
Industry has recently developed a need for people with a mix of design skills, including technical function and aesthetics, and innovation and entrepreneurship.
Design for Technology blends scientific, technical and business subjects with design, with an emphasis on industrial and environmental design. With this mix of skills, graduates will be able to work in interdisciplinary design teams where products have a strong technical function.
Initially design and mathematics topics will be combined with papers in commerce. At the same time, students can also broaden their skills with papers in many different subjects as diverse as Japanese, music and ecology. Students will work closely with local companies and, as part of a team, will be involved in a professional design project solving a design problem for an external client. The strategic use of design within business is also emphasised.
Graduates will be capable of working in a number of design environments, from small new-start companies to large industrial concerns. With appropriate management training they will have the potential to develop new design businesses from start-up to maturity.
